Background of the Study
Virtual reality (VR) technology has gained significant attention in educational settings due to its ability to create immersive, interactive learning environments (Ajayi & Olamide, 2023). In nursing education, VR offers the potential to simulate real-world clinical scenarios without the risks associated with actual patient care, providing students with opportunities to practice and refine their clinical skills in a controlled environment (Adeleke et al., 2023). VR allows for experiential learning, where students can engage in virtual clinical situations, such as patient assessments, medical procedures, and emergency interventions (Olumide et al., 2024).
In University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the use of VR in nursing education has been introduced as a supplement to traditional clinical training. Although VR has shown promise in enhancing clinical competencies, there is limited research on its impact on nursing students' learning outcomes and overall effectiveness in nursing education (Michele & Aliyu, 2024). This study aims to investigate the use of VR in nursing education and its impact on learning, with a focus on how VR can enhance nursing students' clinical decision-making, problem-solving, and procedural skills.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of VR to enhance nursing education, its effectiveness in improving learning outcomes remains underexplored, particularly in the context of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Without an evaluation of the impact of VR on nursing students' learning, it is difficult to determine its value in clinical education and identify areas where VR-based learning can be optimized. This study seeks to investigate the role of VR in nursing education and provide insights into its effectiveness in improving students' clinical skills and knowledge.
Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the impact of virtual reality on nursing students' learning outcomes at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess how VR enhances nursing students' clinical decision-making and procedural skills.
3. To propose recommendations for integrating VR technology into nursing education for improved learning.
Research Questions
1. How does virtual reality impact nursing students' learning outcomes at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital?
2. In what ways does VR enhance nursing students' clinical decision-making and procedural skills?
3. What strategies can be implemented to effectively integrate VR technology into nursing education?
Research Hypotheses
1. Virtual reality significantly improves nursing students' learning outcomes in clinical education.
2. Nursing students who use VR for clinical practice exhibit better decision-making and procedural skills than those who do not.
3. The integration of VR technology into nursing education will enhance students' clinical competency.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and assess the effectiveness of VR in enhancing their learning. Limitations include the potential high cost of VR technology and the availability of resources for large-scale implementation.
Definitions of Terms
• Virtual Reality (VR): An immersive simulation technology that creates a virtual environment for users to interact with, providing experiential learning opportunities (Ajayi & Olamide, 2023).
